Benefits of Membership

Your membership in the Institute for Business & Home Safety will serve as evidence to management and policyholders alike of your commitment to safety and to control the overall cost of property insurance. All insurers licensed or qualified to write property or casualty insurance in any of the United States and all reinsurers licensed to reinsure those risks are eligible for membership in the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). All others are eligible for Associate Membership.

Our insurer and reinsurer members pay dues annually according to their company/group's relative net written premiums. The dues rate represents the annual IBHS budget divided by the total net written premiums for all members.

The premiums used for the IBHS dues calculations are country-wide net written premiums as reported by A.M. Best Company, for the following lines: fire, allied lines, farmowners multiple peril, homeowners multiple peril, commercial multiple peril, inland marine, earthquake, burglary & theft and reinsurance line 30A.

Membership also brings you these benefits:

  • Eligibility to be elected/designated Director at the annual meeting for a three-year term (via affiliation with one of the following classes: National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, Reinsurance Association of America, Alliance of American Insurers, American Insurance Association, National Association of Independent Insurers, and unaffiliated members). Each member shall be entitled to one vote on each matter submitted to a vote of the membership.
